Tropical pondweed invasion at Hévíz outlet! 🌿
A tropical pondweed invasion threatens Keszthely Bay on Lake Balaton after the fast-spreading alien plant covered the nearby Hévíz thermal outlet. 🌿 Warm water from Lake Hévíz flows directly into this area, so the weed can easily reach the lake and find further ground to spread.
The seriousness is shown by the outlet already partly blocked, which can lead to stagnant water and oxygen depletion on the northern shore. Experts say it is the South American species Elodea nuttallii, which thrives increasingly in domestic waters due to climate change. Around Hévíz and Keszthely locals already complain: boating has become difficult and anglers fear fish stocks may collapse.
Balaton tourism could be seriously affected. At Keszthely beaches where thousands swim in summer, weed build-up can ruin bathing and hinder boating and water sports. Without urgent intervention – mechanical removal or chemical treatment – the entire Balaton ecosystem could be at risk, hitting the regional economy long term. For holidaymakers a green carpet along the shore could be oppressive. ⚠️
Authorities are examining the situation, but lakeside municipal leaders including Keszthely's mayor have signalled that cooperation is needed for prevention. Locals are asked not to dump aquarium plants into the water as this accelerates spread.
