🌪️ Gale hits the Balaton: alert for eight counties!
The greatest danger today for lakeside residents and holidaymakers comes from the fierce gale: HungaroMet issued a first-level warning for eight counties, including Veszprém, Somogy and Zala, where gusts of 70–80 km/h may occur near the Balaton. 🌪️
According to the weather service, stormy winds may rage most strongly at the lake from Tuesday afternoon into the night, with huge waves on open water. This affects areas around Siófok, Balatonfüred, Keszthely and Balatonszárszó: both southern and northern shores should expect the gale to complicate travel, especially for cyclists and motorcyclists.
The warning is crucial for locals: Balaton trees, signs and lightweight structures – think beach buffets – may be damaged. For holidaymakers, walking promenades or sailing can be risky: boating may pause temporarily, possibly affecting ferries between Tihany and Szántód. Tourism impact is immediate – at the start of beach season this may deter visitors.
What to do? Stay indoors, secure outdoor items and follow local authority instructions. Living at the Balaton we know how unpredictable gales are, but preparation can prevent accidents. 💨
