Balaton Shock: At Such Low Water Levels, Your Terrace Is Dangerous 🌊
Low water levels are increasingly causing headaches for those living and vacationing along the shores of Balaton. Those who could previously step straight from their terrace into the lake now see dry sandbanks or shallow water in front of them. This phenomenon is not just an aesthetic issue but could seriously transform lakeside life in the region.
According to Gábor Vasas, Director General of the Balaton Limnological Research Institute, the low water level gives nature a chance to reclaim shoreline sections taken from it by overdevelopment in recent decades. On the southern shore, however, it would be nonsensical to build harbors, since the lake bed changes periodically. Instead, some beaches could be made convertible into lidos, adapting to natural fluctuations.
Development along the shores of Balaton accelerated with the construction of the Southern Railway, when the railway embankment narrowed the lake’s basin. Since then, waves of resort construction have continuously reduced the proportion of natural shoreline. The low water level may now halt this process and make room for reed beds, sandbanks, and living communities 🌊.
For local communities, this means rethinking shoreline use. Instead of treating the water’s retreat as an apocalyptic sign, it would be worth seizing the opportunity to create a more sustainable Balaton shore.
