Csopak Forest Clearing: Natura 2000 Area Became the Villa's Landfill 🌲
Csopak is one of the most popular settlements on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, where the Natura 2000 forests and the protected areas of the Balaton Uplands National Park represent outstanding value not only for locals but also for tourism around the lake. That is why it is particularly alarming when these natural treasures are damaged due to construction.
During the construction of the villa in Öreghegyi Street, part of the forest was completely cut down to transport rubble and mixed stone material from the construction site there. According to the Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate, vegetation was destroyed on approximately 800 square meters, including trees, shrubs, and protected herbaceous plants. The owner of the area gave permission for the dumping, so he received a nature conservation fine of 250 thousand forints from the government office 🌲.
The Nature Conservation Guard filed a report, but the police terminated the procedure due to the lack of a crime. According to experts, the regeneration of the area may take 50–100 years, which represents a serious long-term loss for the wildlife of Csopak and the wider Balaton region. Such cases draw attention to the fact that during construction around Lake Balaton, special attention must be paid to preserving protected natural values.
