Balaton Shore Secret: What's More Dangerous Than Low Water Levels ⚠️
Construction projects along the shores of Lake Balaton pose a more serious threat to the lake's ecosystem than low water levels. According to Gábor Vasas, director of the Balaton Limnological Research Institute in Tihany, saving the lake requires not new investments but rethinking the shoreline: dismantling concrete, restoring beaches and reed beds 🌿.
The recent construction works in Fonyód have outraged the institute. At the mouth of the Pogányvölgyi stream, right near the shore, tracked vehicles and machinery appeared to build a four-story residential building in an ecologically critical area. Despite protests from civilians and warnings from researchers, all permits were granted with the support of the local municipality, without any meaningful environmental assessment.
If left alone, nature could reclaim the shore here. Reed beds could filter incoming waters from pollutants and provide natural protection against invasive species. Gábor Vasas is shocked by the “cruel” results of the past ten years around Balaton, where shoreline development continues to shrink the lake’s habitat.
For local communities, this process endangers not only water quality but also the future of beaches and recreational areas. The research institute believes genuine nature protection and the dismantling of artificial shore sections are needed for a sustainable Balaton.
