Balatoni újdonság 2026: így jársz vízen a tavon! 👀

Balaton novelty 2026: this is how you walk on water on the lake! 👀

BalatonLife

The water level of Lake Balaton dropped to an extremely low level this summer, bringing spectacular changes especially on the southern shore. At the beaches of Balatonmáriafürdő and Balatonfenyves, visitors can now walk in ankle-deep water up to 50 meters into the lake bed, while instead of the usual swimming, mud wrestling awaits them.

The current average water level is only 54 centimeters, nearly half of the optimal value. This situation has developed due to successive heat domes and extreme drought, most noticeable on the shallower southern shore sections. ☀️ Locals and holidaymakers alike are experiencing how traditional beach habits are significantly transforming.

According to the Balaton Limnological Research Institute and the Water Management Authority, water level fluctuation is a natural phenomenon, yet due to climate change these low water periods may occur more frequently and last longer. This could pose a serious challenge for tourism in the southern shore settlements, as many guests now prefer coastal walks instead of water biking or long swims.

In the long term, it will be crucial for the Balaton region to prepare for managing critical situations. The current state does not yet threaten the lake drying up, but coastal beaches and local service providers are already sensing changes in guest traffic and leisure activities. 🌊
