The sudden closure of the Keszthely Helikon beach and the rapid subsequent cleaning caused serious attention on the western shore of Balaton. It is particularly worrying for locals and holidaymakers that the water quality of a popular free beach changed dramatically in one day, which may also affect the image of the entire lake in the middle of the high season. At the end of July the beach had to be closed after the amount of Enterococcus bacteria significantly exceeded the limit value, while E. coli approached it. The municipality ordered a control measurement the next day at the same location, as well as at the nearby dog beach and at the Zala-torok. The results were surprising: the bacterial load in the water of the Helikon beach decreased to a fraction of the permitted level, and the Zala did not bring pollution into the lake. Based on the measurement conditions, suspicion of sabotage arose. VÜZ Keszthelyi Városüzemeltető Kft. filed a report, because to achieve the concentration found in the sample taken at the buoys, a large number of people would have had to be present simultaneously even with storm warning and strong waves – while the wind was blowing towards the shore. Many consider a deliberate release from a sailboat possible in order to influence the first measurement. According to experts, making the beach toilets paid or a few isolated cases could not have caused such a large jump, as such values had never been measured before. The case shows how sensitive Balaton-side tourism is to news related to water quality – especially in Keszthely, where beaches play a key role in summer guest traffic. 🌊 The operator hopes that they will be able to welcome bathers undisturbed for the rest of the week.
