Will the Constitutional Court stop concreting Lake Balaton? 🏛️
A recent government decree allowing development on hundreds of hectares of waterfront and green land worries residents of Balaton communities and returning holidaymakers. Civil groups say it threatens the lake's natural values long term and undermines locals' right to a healthy environment.
Amendments could make it easier to transform shoreline zones on both the southern and northern shores, affecting areas still left open today. The complaint claims the move would effectively "concrete around" the lake, reducing space for swimming and nature-based recreation.
For lakeside communities the change would mean less green space, more noise and traffic, and risk of worse water quality. In summer it would hit tourism especially hard because many guests choose the region for its shoreline nature.
Submitting organisations expect the Constitutional Court to annul the decree, stressing that the lake's future and local quality of life are at stake. 🌊
