Fewer phantom midges at the Balaton this year! 🦟

BalatonLife

Good news for lakeside residents and holidaymakers! 😊 Staff at the Balaton Limnological Research Institute say far fewer phantom midge swarms threaten the lake area than last year. Larvae developing in sediment are at less than half 2024 levels – relief for shore towns.

Based on regular sampling, shallow shore zones where midge larvae thrive show unusually low biomass. This especially affects the southern shore (Siófok, Balatonlelle) and northern towns like Balatonfüred and Csopak. Experts cite favourable weather – including a cooler spring and more effective natural predators.

Fewer insects greatly help local tourism. Holidaymakers can relax more calmly on beaches; renting pedal boats and water bikes will be less annoying. For locals it means less chemical spraying, protecting the lake ecosystem and popular gastro events such as Balaton wine festivals. Harbours need not fear tourism drops from swarms – a more pleasant summer is in sight! 🌊

The institute continues monitoring and will alert the region if conditions change. Meanwhile let's enjoy the lake without midge attacks.
