Balaton wake-up call: spectacular shelf cloud on the horizon ☁️

Lakeside towns, especially around Siófok and Balatonfüred, received an unusually dramatic wake-up this morning. With showers arriving under a shelf cloud, the sky over the lake offered a scene many photographed immediately.

Morning downpours surprised people near the beaches in several Balaton communities. Shelf clouds are uncommon over the lake – this curved formation often signals gusty winds and short intense rain. Fortunately only refreshing showers arrived, greeted with excitement rather than alarm on promenades and harbours.

For local tourism such weather has a double effect: it freshens the air after summer heat but briefly stops beach and water activities. Guests in Balatonalmádi and Keszthely waited out the rain on café terraces watching the cloud. Water temperature was barely affected, so afternoon swimming was still fine.

Because of the Balaton microclimate, shelf-cloud events often show their full drama only along the shore while a light breeze may prevail a few kilometres inland. 🌧️
