Balaton storm warning wakes: From 1 April! ⚡
From 1 April the Balaton storm-warning system starts, saving lakeside holidaymakers, sailors and anglers for decades each summer season. ⚠️ Across the full shoreline from Siófok to Balatonfüred and Keszthely to Tihany it signals approaching storms, making recreation safer on Hungary's inland sea.
Disaster management runs the system on major lakes from early April to late October. Besides Balaton it operates on Lake Velence and Lake Tisza; the Hungarian Fertő point is under maintenance. On Balaton yellow, orange and red lights on shore pillars indicate wind strength and storm risk – especially vital for sailing fleets and small boats that can get into trouble in sudden gales mid-lake.
Locals and holiday-home owners welcome the relief: in towns like Balatonalmádi or Fonyód many remember past tragedies needing rescue when storms hit. This year the system may prevent accidents, supporting livelier beach life and smoother tourism, boosting visitor confidence and the Balaton economy. 🏖️
