Is Lake Balaton thirsty? Why drought dominates the debate 🌵

BalatonLife

Lake Balaton's water level and drought periods are increasingly linked: latest data suggest this summer could surpass the historic 2022 drought, directly affecting lakeside towns and holiday homes. Recent rain barely eased catastrophic water shortage – long-term rescue of the Balaton and Lake Velence may need artificial replenishment.

Drought in the catchment already lowers depth near beaches and harbours. In Siófok, Keszthely and Balatonfüred, boaters and swimmers notice shallower beds: harder navigation and faster warming in shallow bays, which can fuel algae in hot months ☀️.

Tourism feels the impact too. In peak season, hospitality and beach revenues may fall if water levels keep dropping. Locals worry about farmland and fish stocks because the ecosystem reacts sensitively to prolonged shortage.

Experts say only artificial intervention can maintain adequate levels long term – shaping tourism, drinking water supply and quality of life around the lake for decades.
