Balaton snow apocalypse: 400 firefighters attack, 1m barriers! ❄️
The southern shore of Lake Balaton was also affected by Friday's intense snowfall, where the firefighters in Zala county had to intervene nearly four hundred times due to snow jams. ❄️ The up to one-meter snow wall was a serious challenge for the residents and winter vacationers of the region, especially around Keszthely, Hévíz and Balatonmagyaród.
According to the summary of the Operative Tribe, the counties of Győr-Moson-Sopron, Zala and Vas gave the authorities the most work. In some areas of Vas, 40 centimeters of fresh snow fell, while in other places snowblowers and firefighters worked to open the roads. 🚒 In the area of Lake Balaton, there were congestions on highways 71 and 7, which made it difficult to travel to the coastal settlements.
For the locals, the snow situation caused problems in everyday life: many could not get to work or shops, and holiday home owners are worried about the load capacity of their roofs. It also affected tourism - guests of the Héviz thermal baths faced delays, and Balaton fishermen canceled their trips. The authorities warn of caution: there is still a risk of slippery roads in the coming days, which could affect the region's winter programs.
The municipalities on the Balaton coast are already cleaning the roads so that the situation normalizes as soon as possible, helping local residents and visitors to travel.
