Balaton receding: 30 cm of water gone, summer at risk! 🌊
Lake Balaton currently holds 20–30 centimetres less water than usual; the level shows just 90 centimetres – a 🌊low not seen in ten years, and if nothing changes the summer beach season may start with serious problems for coastal towns.
According to Balaton water gauge data, this level is especially worrying at this point in the season. Normal would be around 110–120 centimetres, so the deficit already affects Balaton shipping routes. Larger boats struggle in Siófok and Balatonfüred harbours, endangering passenger services. Around Keszthely and Fonyód in shallower bays water has retreated, exposing lakeside mud layers.
Locals and holidaymakers alike face the problem. On beaches such as Balatonalmádi or Zamárdi, waterfront zones may dry out, spoiling bathing. Water sports lovers – windsurfers, sailors – may face restricted courses, while anglers worry about the lake ecosystem. If dry weather continues, boats running aground or reduced water quality may occur in summer, deterring tourists from Balaton villages.
Experts blame the mild winter and weak precipitation, but Balaton cooperatives already plan water replenishment via the Sió sluice. Locals hope April rains save the season, otherwise tourism – the region's engine – may suffer serious losses. ⚠️Let's watch the lake's condition!
